The Buy-a-buffalo Scheme - HOT OFF THE PRESSES! - March 2007

In South India, remote communities don't necessarily have the luxury of a cheap grocery store in close proximity. Indeed a culture of self-sufficiency and subsistence farming is the order of the day in some parts. The Grace Children Home has always considered it best practice to provide for its own dairy needs, partly for convenience, food hygiene and reliability of supply.

Water buffalo

For several years now there has existed a special facility for dairy cattle on the Promised Land site where the Grace Children Home is situated. Behind the main orphanage building lies a substantial stall for providing shade for the animals. In the past the home has had a mixture of mainly water buffalo but also some Jersey cows.

Flood losses

During extreme wet weather a couple of years ago much livestock was unavoidably lost including the prized Jersey cow. However re-stocking has been taking place and now the charity has come up with a new scheme to promote this particular need and increase production to match the burgeoning population of children in the home.

  • Buy-a-buffalo scheme open to individuals, groups and organisations
  • One-off cash donation purchases one animal for the home
  • You get to name the animal which then has the name applied in eco and animal-friendly paint! (photo provided)
  • Prices vary between £200 - £300. Contact the Chairman for further details.
  • As well as providing for the GCH, excess output can be sold to the local equivalent of the milk marketing board, thus providing further funds for the work of the home.
