Orthopaedic and Cardiac surgery programme

As far as the calendar is concerned and the days lying immediately ahead, there are no further planned operations at the present time. However our immediate work in this area concerns Manga Lakshmi whom has recently had surgery on her leg to correct deformity caused by polio.

See our main photo gallery for further pictures of Manga following her operation.

Note here though the Iliazarov Ring Fixator apparatus which is always a feature of Dr Gopalakrishnan's polio-corrective surgery in Chennai.

Here Manga is seen with Isle of Man schoolteacher Mrs Emily Richardson

Manga will need years of physiotherapy, exercise and other rehabilitation in order to gain full mobility and reach her potential. As is the case for the other post-op children at the home, she will have access to all the resources she needs and the day-to-day support and encouragement to continue making progress.

An example to others

Manga has been singled out for special praise by GCH Manager Timothy Babu on account of her fortitude and positive attitude before and after what is a needful but traumatic surgical procedure.

It is always impressed upon children receiving this particular treatment that their perseverance and self-discipline in the post-operative stage will be key to deciding their speed of development. With this in mind it is worth remembering the following:

  • The GCH has special rooms set aside with a variety of rehabilitative equipment
  • A qualified physiotherapist visits the home every week to give bespoke advice and encouragement to the kids
  • There are a number of other GCH children who have made great progress following their orthopaedic surgery
  • The home's grounds provide opportunities for walks and sporting activities to help them get mobile again
  • A dedicated team of experienced helpers are on site at the home at all times to counsel our "surgery children"
