Community

The Grace Third World Fund exists primarily to meet serious practical needs in India and raise the necessary resources to meet those needs. However, in the process of doing so, it is inevitable that the local community benefits closer to home as a result of getting involved.

These benefits are intangible but very real nevertheless. The trustees and other interested friends who have been out to see the impact of the work first hand have been greatly affected by what can only be described as a character-building experience seeing how the other half live.

When we come home to the Isle of Man, things that have been taken for granted are appreciated all the more, whether it be our standard of living or social opportunity. The other side of the coin is the culture shock of visiting a distant country where strong family values and standards of dress and behaviour are much higher than that of the West. This is particularly so amongst their young people where the concept of juvenile deliquency is virtually unheard of.

Listed below are 2 examples of community impact and local interaction that we have been a part of in the Isle of Man.

Ballakermeen School, Douglas, IOM

Students at the secondary school in central Douglas took a particular interest in the young children at the Grace Children Home who had received orthopaedic surgery partly as a result of their financial contribution.

GTWF's late chairman the Rev Matthew Else had been into the school to broaden the kids' understanding of what their peers in India have to contend with on a daily basis.

With the aid of photographic display boards the kids at Ballakermeen have had some exposure to different cultures and humanitarian needs.

Sunday Night at the Mill, Manx Radio

GTWF's late chairman the Rev Else had been occasionally invited on to Manx Radio's Sunday Night at the Mill programme, which broadcasts from the new multimedia centre at St John's Mill.

This programme discusses a wide range of social and ethical issues and has helped local listeners to broaden their horizons a little with regard to overseas aid, and where the Isle of Man fits into the globalised aid picture.
